Local Food Movement

Here is some information on the great ways to buy, eat and live local.
There is a U-Pick in south east Leduc County that sells ice cream pail buckets of raspberries, Saskatoon berries and Evans cherries, for only $10 a pail. Right now the cherries are so ripe and plump on the branches they resemble grapes, warm and squishy with juice. They will make the perfect sour cherry pie and sour cherry liqueur, which will be ready just in time for Christmas.
Watch for our December Healthy Choices Recipe of the Month.
The U-Pick is run by Linda and Malcolm. There phone number is
780-941-2350.
In Leduc County the following Farmers' Markets are held:
~ Leduc Farmers' Market: Thursdays from 10am-1:30pm until October 4
~ Devon Lions Farmers' Market: Thursdays from 2pm-5pm until October 11
~ Beaumont Farmers' Market: Wednesdays from 4pm-8pm
~ Bigger markets are held in Edmonton on Saturdays from 9am-3pm on 104 street until October 6 and at the
Old Strathcona Farmers' Market year round Saturdays from 8am-3pm.
Farmer’s market tips:
*Arrive early for the best quality and selection of produce
*Try before you buy, tasting is part of the experience of a farmers market.
*Bargain hunt, haggling is frowned upon but you can often score deals on bumper crops.
*Be adventurous in small doses with new products. Try out red carrots, golden beets, Thai basil and maple butter.
*If it has a peel, it will last for at least a week.
*Make stock.Take all your left over vegetables from the week before and make your own vegetable stock. Freeze in ice cube trays and add to soups, beans and stir-frys all winter.
Lastly there is a group in Edmonton called Operation Fruit Rescue (ORF). You can sign up, if you have a fruit tree in your yard and cannot harvest the entire bounty or can volunteer your time to help harvest and enjoy locally grown fruit.
